Ah! It’s really surprising watching a filmmaker who used to make merely the best flicks remade badly into Hindi. Yeah! Priyadarshan happens to be an auteur who till now hasn’t been successful remaking at least one film on the row and that’s more illustrious with his recent release ‘Billu’ remake of Malayalam Super Hit ‘Katha Parayum Pol’. On the pars, he had persistently made some path-breaking flicks like ‘Kaala Paani’. Perhaps, you may enter theaters for watching this film with mixed expectations and when the show is over, you should be spellbound with this stunning piece of work.
The film set at the backdrops of pre-independence era in Kanchivaram, it’s about Vengadam (Prakash Raj), a good silk weaver in town. He vows to his small girl child that he would weave a fantastic Silk Saree for her marriage. Of course, everyone in the town consider this to be the hot topic as in those days it isn’t an easy deal to weave a silk saree for a poor weaver as it’s so expensive. Although, he saves the money, his brother in law shatters them down with his evil mind. Then with no options left, he starts stealing strands of silk from his workplace and for a greater surprise, even after 19 years, he isn’t able to complete his task. Meanwhile, he is involved in communism and starts hosting strikes that eventually closes down the workplace. Now, with his daughter’s marriage nearing, he has to complete weaving the silk saree by stealing the strands. On the pars, he shouldn’t give up his idealisms.
So, would he be a lovable father or a proud communist forms crux of the story with a heart-binding climax.
Technical aspects have been splendidly handled. Be it Thiru’s trenchant cinematography that makes you feel the film is really mind-boggling. Sabu Cyril’s art direction of an ancient era sways with top-notching qualities. With accordance to good screenplay of past and present, the editing work has been carried on with best traits. M.G. Sree Kumar’s musical score is another pearl embellished to the precious jewel.
Getting on with performance, Prakash Raj as Vengadam has donned a powerful role unforeseen in any films. Be it his expressions of emoting to various situations of his child’s birth, death; He sweeps us off with great work. Shreya Reddy should really wait for more prestigious honors for her stupefying role. Rest of the star-casts has done justice to their roles.
On the whole, though ‘Kanchivaram’ may not be commercially fitting for good collections, it’s a worth watch film by every audiences that’s how you express your respect for a good piece of work.
But, don’t take the words of Priyadarshan as he said ‘My film is far best than Slumdog Millionaire and I am wondering why Indians are uplifting that film and not mine’.

Does fear have a new face? Yes it does… it is the theatre that is screening Yavarum Nalam and I mean that in the positive sense.
The thriller-horror genre in Indian movies have not been unexploited. The scary fare that is usually fed to us is of bad quality with even worse storyline. Vikram K Kumar has tried something different with Yavarum Nalam. The premise may see too childish to some, but the treatment of the subject is extremely interesting and I must say scary too!
Now talking about the plot, it revolves around a family of eight members, Manohar (Madhavan), his mother (Saranya), his wife Priya (Neetu Chandra), his elder brother (Hari Nair), sister-in-law (Ameetha), his nephew and niece and younger sister. This happy close knit family moves into a new apartment 13B on the thirteenth floor of a newly constructed building. Like any family, the women in this household are TV soap fanatics and their latest obsession is a serial called Yavarum Nalam.
Manohar, a civil engineer by profession, is very happy to have moved to this new house and lots of good things happen in the family, his brother gets promoted, his sister passes her college exams, his wife gets pregnant. But he is also surrounded by some strange happenings and an unknown fear…a fear that changes his life. What is that fear… well you have to go and watch the film.
Coming to performances, Madhavan has done a fine job, proving once again that given a good script he can do wonders. The struggle of a man trying to protect his family is well conveyed by him. He is a natural in the role. Neetu Chandra who makes her debut in Tamil with this movie emotes well, but needs to work on her lip sync of Tamil dialogues. The rest of the cast provides good support to the story.
Cinematography by P.C Sreeram is amazing. Not that the veteran cameraman needs the applause, but for this genre of cinema, the camera annd lighting play a very important role and P.C has created that ‘edge of the seat’ feel. Editing by Sreekar Prasad is also top notch, though a tighter first half could have made this film even more thrilling.
Talking about the story and screenplay, I must applaud Vikram K Kumar for trying something different. In today’s cinema, what we need is a novel concept, film-makers willing to take the risk. And Vikram has done a fine job of that.
Of course another important element of the thriller-horror genre is music. Composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the fans of these composers may miss their usual fare, but the background score by Tubbi-Parik is good. It may be jarring at places, but the script demands that.
Final Word: Presented by Big Pictures, produced by Suresh Balajee and George Plus under the banner of Wide Angle Creations, Yavarum Nalam is a commendable effort and is certainly recommended for viewing, but preferably not alone!

I’m sorry but Dreamweaver is dying

I’ve received a number of very kind emails regarding my last digital design column, but I have to admit that a couple made me feel slightly uncomfortable.
These were the emails from designers thanking me for pointing them in the direction of Dreamweaver when they were making the transition from print to web design. It was a decision that they had come to appreciate greatly over the years, providing them with the best possible platform for their web design careers.

The problem is that Dreamweaver is dying…
To be fair it’s not Dreamweaver’s fault. Nor is the problem Adobe and its development team - the last Dreamweaver CS4 version was the most impressive release in years. Moreover, although Microsoft Expression Web poses a far more credible threat than FrontPage could muster, Dreamweaver remains the best HTML/CSS page-based editor available.
The real problem for Dreamweaver and for its users is that the nature of the web is changing dramatically. Dynamically-generated web applications, from Amazon right down to the humble blog, all offer much more – in-built commenting, voting, RSS feeds, etc - than the best sites built on static HTML can ever hope to provide.
This isn’t a matter of bells and whistles, it’s absolutely fundamental. Ultimately a web site is all about content - posting it and making it findable – and Dreamweaver and the other static HTML editors have proven fundamentally flawed when it comes to these two core tasks (and features such as Dreamweaver’s libraries and templates are patches not solutions).
The bottom line is that the old model of the central webmaster hand-spinning every page of every website and, worse, manually adding the navigation necessary to help users find it, just isn’t scalable or viable. The only feasible course for the future is for content to be posted by the content contributor, whether that’s the site owner or site visitors, and for the best possible navigation to be constructed around that content on the fly.
In other words Web 2.0 isn’t an empty slogan, it marks a fundamental break with the past and Dreamweaver lies on the wrong side of it. So is this the end for Dreamweaver and the traditional Dreamweaver-based web designer?

Roger Federer confirmed a third-round blockbuster with Marat Safin with an emphatic three-set victory at the Australian Open on Wednesday.The second-seeded Swiss crushed Russian Evgeny Korolev 6-2 6-3 6-1 in just 87 minutes after Safin outclassed Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 7-5 6-2 6-2 in his second-round match.Safin beat Federer in an epic semi-final at Melbourne Park in 2005 before going on to beat Lleyton Hewitt in the final to land his second grand slam title.The Russian has said 2009 will be his last season on the tour.

Simon Cowell has revealed his ‘sexual desire’ for fellow X-Factor judge Cheryl Cole. The music mogul admitted that he fantasises to kiss Cheryl, if she weren’t married. When asked who he would choose if he could kiss anyone in the world and the 49-year-old star revealed that he fancied the Girls Aloud star. “I’m going to get into so much trouble after this. I want a disclaimer first of all that I’m going to say this person as if they weren’t married…so I am going to say Cheryl Cole,” The Sun quoted him as saying.
